What does asbestos legislation cover?
Asbestos legislation ensures that asbestos is handled safely and without health risks. The regulations cover both companies and private individuals and include preliminary investigation, authorisation and disposal.
According to Danish Working Environment Authority's asbestos regulation no. 744 there are specific requirements for how asbestos work should be carried out:
- Authorisation requirements: Only authorised companies are allowed to handle asbestos.
- Notification of asbestos work: Must be reported to the Danish Working Environment Authority at least 8 days before start-up.
- Personal protective equipment: Mandatory when working with asbestos.
- Duty of enquiry: Asbestos-containing materials must be identified before starting work.
- Short-term work (exception): Private individuals may carry out minor work without authorisation, such as removing individual roof panels.

Authorisation is required for businesses
For companies carrying out demolition of asbestos-containing materials, authorisation is required. Companies must fulfil specific requirements, including:
- Development and approval of a quality management system (QMS).
- Hiring a responsible professional with relevant training in asbestos management.
- Ensuring that employees have completed statutory courses in asbestos work.
Companies without authorisation are only allowed to carry out minor tasks such as short-term removal of individual asbestos sheets or tiles with asbestos-containing adhesive.
Rules for private individuals
Private individuals are allowed to carry out minor asbestos work, but only under special circumstances.
For example:
- Removal of individual roof panels with asbestos.
- Removal of asbestos-containing tile adhesive or minor pipe bends.
Private individuals should not carry out extensive asbestos work without the help of authorised companies. Hiring professionals is strongly recommended, as improper handling can lead to the spread of harmful asbestos dust.
