Find the correct asbestos roof sheet number

See how you can find out if your roofing sheets contain asbestos.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Find the number on the outside of the disc. It is typically embossed into the material and can vary in length and format.
  2. Compare the number with the table above to determine if the sheet contains asbestos.
  3. If the number is not visible or readable, a professional analysis is recommended.

How to quickly check if your roof tiles contain asbestos

The first step to finding out if your roofing sheets contain asbestos is to examine the embossed number on the outside of the sheets. This number is your key to identifying whether the sheets are safe or contain asbestos.

  • Numbers with letters (e.g. "NT"): No - Manufactured without asbestos.
  • 8 digits starting with 4 or 5: No - Manufactured without asbestos.
  • 5-6 digits starting with 0, 1, 3, 5, 6 or 7: Yes - Contains asbestos

How do you identify asbestos in roofing sheets?

When working with older roofing sheets, it's important to know if they contain asbestos. There can be serious health and environmental consequences if asbestos-containing sheets are damaged or mishandled.

Methods to check for asbestos

  • Embossing number: The number embossed on the outside of the sheet reveals whether it contains asbestos (see table above).
  • Analyse: If the number is missing or there is uncertainty, you can send a sample to a lab for a professional assessment.

When do roofing sheets contain asbestos?

  • Roofing sheets manufactured before 1984 always contain asbestos.
  • Sheets produced between 1984 and 1988 may contain asbestos, depending on the manufacturer.
  • After 1988, the production of asbestos-containing sheets was discontinued, but residual stocks may have been used until 1990.
